BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

RESCUE & RE-HOMING PROGRAM

AIM OF THE RESCUE & RE-HOMING PROGRAM

To promote and support the welfare of all Bernese Mountain Dogs and known cross-bred Bernese.

HOW DO DOGS GET INTO THE RESCUE & RE-HOMING PROGRAM?

The dog is placed under the care of the Club's Rescue Officer during the preliminary stages of seeking the owner(s), checking health and temperament and, if necessary, seeking a caring new home.

Every effort is made to identify and contact the breeder of the dog as the breeder usually has good knowledge of the dog's history and has a life-long concern for the welfare of the dog.

A thorough veterinary examination is organised to check the dog's health, this may include sterilisation.   The dog's temperament is appraised throughout these initial days by the Rescue Officer and, if necessary, an animal behaviourist.

The history of a dog dealt with by the Club's Rescue & Re-homing Program is rarely known in full by the Club, which in turn means that the Club cannot warrant the suitability of the dog as a pet.

The Rescue Officer supports new owners in settling the dog into it's new home and guidelines are given to assist with feeding and general care.

Fortunately we rarely need to implement the Rescue & Re-homing Program - let's try and keep it that way!
